| John Encandela, Ph.D., is Director of the ACGME Outcomes Project at New York Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia and Cornell. He assists directors of residency/fellowship programs, providing tools and resources for training in and evaluating residents’ competencies and evaluating program outcomes. Receiving a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, he has provided technical direction in program monitoring and evaluation for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Global AIDS Program, and technical assistance for U.S. Government and United Nation’s HIV-related evaluation officers in 30 countries. He was Director of Evaluative Research for the Pennsylvania HIV Prevention Program while at the University of Pittsburgh. There, he was also Assistant Professor of Public Health and Sociology, and principal investigator of two National Institutes of Health studies involving mental health services for people with severe mental illnesses. Dr. Encandela began his evaluation research career as Evaluation Associate at the Pew Charitable Trusts in Philadelphia. |

Mark J. Graham, Ph.D.

| Mark J. Graham, PhD is Director of Education Research at CERE, as well as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at P&S and an Honorary Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, he received a MA in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University’s (CU) Teachers College (TC) and a PhD in Educational Psychology from CU’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He serves as a resource for College of Physician & Surgeons (P&S) faculty needing assistance with conceptualizing medical education research studies, navigating Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for these education studies, as well as collaborating on data collection, analysis, and write-up for grants or journal publication. He also assists faculty to develop as educators by informing them of the latest educational theories, and suggesting practical applications of theoretical knowledge to classroom and clinical instruction. In addition, he serves as a resource for P&S students wishing to improve their academic study skills, exam taking, and medical board preparation. |

Zoon Naqvi, MBBS, MHPE, EdM

Zoon Naqvi, MBBS, MHPE, EdM, joined CERE staff in August 2005. She is working with Dr. Mark Graham, Ph.D on two Stemmler Foundation-funded projects: Development of Assessment Tool for a)Systems-based Practice and b)Practice-based Learning and Improvement.. She uses her background in medicine and additional training in psychometrics, evaluation, and research methodology to assist with various CERE projects under the guidance of Dr. Graham. Her research interests focus on development and validation of assessment tools. She hopes to use her experience in medical education and knowledge of measurement to assist in development of relevant program evaluations in medical education.

| Gingi Pica, MPH joined the Center in the spring of 2006. As a program coordinator, she works with the New York Presbyterian Hospital ACGME Outcome Project and assists various faculty education research projects. She recently helped coordinate the 2006 Program Director/Chief Resident Retreat, and is redesigning the Outcome project’s website to facilitate sharing of evaluation tools and resources. In addition, she has been working with the Harlem Hospital Stroke Prevention Project, using her experience in the design and implementation of community-based research projects to coordinate data collection and reporting for the project. She received a BA in Sociology from Brown University and a MPH in Behavioral Science and Health Education from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Before coming to the Center, Gingi coordinated an NIH funded research project at the Adolescent AIDS Program at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center. In her younger days she was a competitive figure skater, and she still idolizes Debi Thomas.
