About EndNote

EndNote is a software program that allows users to search, retrieve, and store reference citations from bibliographic databases such as PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and more, as well as library catalogs such as CLIO and WorldCAT. It can generate bibliographies, reading lists, and footnotes in many citation styles, and works with Microsoft Word, enabling users to add and format their citations as they write their papers. EndNote is available for download from the library.

Download & Configure EndNote

Columbia University makes EndNote available to all current students, faculty, and staff, free of charge with a valid Columbia University UNI and password. The current version available is EndNote 9. Clicking on the links below will take you to a log-in page - enter your UNI and password to begin the download.

Note: Windows users must have both the installer and the license file in a temporary folder for the install to work. Save both files to a folder first, then run the .msi download. Accept all default settings and, if prompted, agree to the terms of the license.

Upgrading from a Previous Version

While it is not required, it is best to uninstall older versions of EndNote before you install a new one. Before you begin, be sure to back up custom styles, filters, connection files, and databases.

Windows: Uninstall your older EndNote by going to Start -> Programs -> EndNote -> Uninstall EndNote. Any filters or styles you may have created under a new name will be saved in the appropriate folders of the older version, which will otherwise be empty. You can put them into the appropriate folders of your newly installed version.

Macintosh: Uninstall your older EndNote versions by opening EndNote, going to the EndNote menu, selecting "Customizer" and then "Uninstall." Be sure to pull out any filters or styles you may have created or edited before you drag the EndNote folder to the trash. You can put them back in the appropriate folders of your new installed EndNote program.

Mobile access

EndNote can also be accessed via the EndNote for iPad app. For more information also see our mobile applications page.
