Deans of the Health Science Schools l. College of Physicians and Surgeons Founded as the Faculty of Medicine of King's College, 1767. Closed 1776 as a result of the American Revolution. Revived, 1791, as the Faculty of Medicine of Columbia College. Merged in 1814 with the College of Physicians and Surgeons which had been founded in 1807. P&S established a nominal affiliation with Columbia in 1860, but was not fully merged into the University until 1891. Since the 1940s, the Dean of P&S has often, but not always, also served as the Vice President for the entire health sciences campus.

Founded as the Presbyterian Hospital Training School for Nurses, 1892; renamed Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, c.1904; became Department of Nursing of the Columbia University Faculty of Medicine, 1937; Columbia University School of Nursing, 1974. From 1937 to c.1974, director of the School of Nursing had the title "Assistant Dean for Nursing."
III. College of Dental Medicine Founded in 1916 as the School of Dentistry; absorbed the College of Dental and Oral Surgery of New York in 1923 and renamed the School of Dental and Oral Surgery; renamed the College of Dental Medicine, 2006. From 1934 to 1958, the deanship of the dental school was held by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (P&S) with Associate Deans responsible for the day-to-day operations of the School.
IV. Mailman School of Public Health Founded May 1921 as the Delamar Institute of Public Health; opened Sept. 1922; renamed School of Public Health, 1945; name changed to School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine, 1955; renamed School of Public Health, c.1973. Designated Mailman School of Public Health, 1998. Until 1986, heads of the School had title "Assistant Dean for Public Health" or "Director."
