- College of Physicians and Surgeons Obituary Database
This database contains over 6,300 death notices of physicians who were graduates and/or faculty members of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) and which were published in various Columbia University alumni publications up through Fall 2006. Besides P&S graduates and faculty members, there are also entries for recipients of Columbia's Doctor of Medical Science degree (MSD), Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) in the biomedical sciences, and Certificate in Psychoanalytical Medicine (PSY).
At present the database includes obituaries from 1909 to 2006 and is updated quarterly. The earliest class represented is 1844.
The entries cover all issues of P&S, the quarterly journal of the Alumni Association of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, from its founding in June 1955 (as the P&S Alumni Association Bulletin) to the present. Also included are death notices appearing in the Columbia Alumni News from 1909-1957.
Most notices, especially those appearing in the Columbia Alumni News, are extremely brief and have been transcribed in their entirety. Entries for longer notices which have been summarized will note that. The journal title, volume and issue number, and date are cited for all entries. In some instances the citation also refers to an obituary appearing in The New York Times or other newspapers.
Researchers should be aware that many entries, especially those in the Columbia Alumni News, often include nothing but the year of graduation and date of death. There are also some further variations concerning graduation classes:
- Where the class year of a graduate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons is unknown, it appears as P&S????
- Where it is unclear which degree was earned from Columbia, but the entry notes the year in which the degree was earned, it appears as ???1960 or similarly.
- If the subject is a faculty member who graduated from a school other than the College of Physicians and Surgeons, then class year appears as "Non P&S." Such entries may be found by searching in "Graduating Year" with "X."
