Personal Papers and Manuscripts BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Louis Faugères Bishop, the son of Dr. Louis F. Bishop, a pioneer U.S. cardiologist, and his wife Charlotte Gruner Bishop, was born in New York City, April 20, 1901. He was educated at Yale (Class of 1921) and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (M.D., 1925). Like his father, Bishop became a prominent cardiologist. He served as President of the American College of Cardiologists and the New York Cardiological Society. Bishop was also a founding member and President of the American College of Sports Medicine. Bishop was author or co-author of several dozen scientific articles. He also published two memoirs: The Birth of a Specialty: The Diary of an American Cardiologist, 1926-1972 (New York: Vantage, 1977) and Myself When Young: Growing Up in New York, 1901-1925 (New York: K.S. Giniger, 1985). Bishop died June 1, 1986, at his home in Manhattan. SCOPE AND CONTENT: The papers also contain a typescript of Ruth Bennett’s biography of Bishop’s father, also Louis F.
