NEW YORK ORTHOPAEDIC HOSPITAL.
Patient records, 1870-1873, 1926-1929, 1941-1950.
20 cubic feet (1 vol. and 20 records cartons)

HISTORICAL NOTE :

The New York Orthopaedic Dispensary opened in 1866 to provide orthopedic care for the poor children of New York City.  Its name was changed to New York Orthopaedic Dispensary and Hospital in 1874, and later to New York Orthopaedic Hospital.  A surgical service was established in 1876, and adult patients were first admitted in 1910. From 1904 to 1943, a country branch for the rehabilitation of children with tuberculosis was operated in Westchester County.

The New York Orthopaedic Hospital merged with Presbyterian Hospital in 1945 and it moved to the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1950.  It also serves as the department of orthopedic surgery for the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

SCOPE AND CONTENT :

An incomplete set of records of patients seen at New York Orthopaedic Hospital, 1870-1873, 1926-1929, and 1941-1950.  Content varies, but besides the basic patient information and medical history, the 20th century records may also include nurses’ and social workers’ notes, laboratory results, and temperature charts.  After moving to the Medical Center in 1950, the NYOH’s patient records were interfiled with those of Presbyterian Hospital.

ORGANIZATION:

The casebook is in chronological order by date of admission; the case files are in case number order, which is roughly chronological.

ACCESS:

Because the records include Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), access is allowed only under the terms of Archives and Special Collections’ Access Policy to Records Containing Protected Health Information.

Because of staff constraints and the lack of a name index, Archives & Special Collections cannot search for individual records.  Microfilm of much of Presbyterian’s post-1929 patient records are held by the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Dept. of Health Information Management and persons wishing to locate the records of individuals should contact them at: http://www.nyp.org/guide/info/medical.html?

Boxes 1-20 are stored off-site and will take 1-2 days to retrieve. Researchers must call in advance to use the collection.

PROVENANCE:

Gift of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Dept. of Health Information Management, 2000 (acc. no. 2000.07.05).
