The Vanderbilt Clinic was established in 1886 with a donation to the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) from the sons of William Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885).  It opened to patients in Jan. 1888 on the P&S campus at Amsterdam Ave. and West 60th St.  Besides offering low-cost medical care to the neighborhood, Vanderbilt served as a teaching facility for P&S students.

As part of the agreement of affiliation between Columbia University and Presbyterian Hospital, the University agreed to divest itself of its clinical units, and in 1925, Vanderbilt became part of Presbyterian.  In 1928, it moved to the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center where it became the outpatient department of Presbyterian Hospital.

SCOPE AND CONTENT :

An incomplete set of medical records of patients seen at the Vanderbilt Clinic, 1914-1915, 1917-1928.  There are 13 bound volumes of records of the Clinic’s neurological department, 1914-1926, and .75 cubic feet of file folders from a wide variety of departments, 1924-1928.

Besides the usual patient information, the neurology department volumes often include results of examinations of reflexes, muscular coordination, intelligence, and other tests of the nervous system. 

ORGANIZATION:

The volumes are organized by year and case number; the case files are organized by department and then by case number in a rough chronological order

ACCESS:

Because the records include Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), access is allowed only under the terms of Archives and Special Collections’ Access Policy to Records Containing Protected Health Information.

Because of staff constraints and the lack of a name index, Archives & Special Collections cannot search for individual records.  Microfilm of much of Presbyterian’s post-1929 patient records are held by the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Dept. of Health Information Management and persons wishing to locate the records of individuals should contact them at: http://www.nyp.org/guide/info/medical.html?

Box 1 is stored off-site and will take 1-2 days to retrieve. Researchers must call in advance to use the collection.
