BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:
Earl Theron Engle was born March 19, 1896 in Waterloo, Iowa. He received his A.B. from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1921 and did graduate work at the University of Colorado and at Stanford University where he received his doctorate in 1925. He joined the department of anatomy at Columbia in 1928 where he remained until his death. Engle's research focused on mammalian reproduction and human fertility. He was president of the Endocrine Society and from 1937 to 1947 served as part-time director of the National Committee on Maternal Health. He died December 17, 1957 in New York City.

SCOPE AND CONTENT:
Correspondence, documents, memorial statements and a photograph album documenting the life of Earl T. Engle, Prof. of Anatomy at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1928-1957. The bulk of the papers is from 1922-30 and document Engle's graduate education and early scientific efforts. Also included is Engle's humorous ten-page account of his participation in the joint Columbia University-American Museum of Natural History African Anatomical Expedition in 1929-30.

The photograph album contains portraits of Engle from infancy to middle age; pictures of his homes, vacations, and colleagues; and scenes from the African Anatomical Expedition.
