RG 5.6 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY. SCHOOL OF DENTAL AND ORAL SURGERY. Association of Dental Alumni. Records, 1894-1990. 3 cubic feet (6 document boxes; 4 card file boxes; 1 volume; 2 plaques) SUMMARY: Records of the Association of Dental Alumni of the School of Dental and Oral Surgery, including those of the Dental Hygienists Alumnae Association and of the Alumni Association of the College of Dental and Oral Surgery of New York. Included are correspondence, minutes, agenda, financial records, programs, questionnaires, newspaper clippings, photographs, plaques and certificates. HISTORICAL NOTE: The Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery (SDOS) was founded in 1916 as the School of Dentistry. In 1923 the School absorbed the College of Dental and Oral Surgery of New York (CDOS), founded in 1892, and received its present name. The Program in Dental Hygiene was established in 1916 as the New York School of Dental Hygiene. In March 1917, it was merged into Columbia thus becoming the world's first university-affiliated dental hygiene school. It graduated its first class that year. In 1953, Columbia established the first ever M.S. degree program in the field. Until the late 1960s only women were admitted and even after this date, women remained the overwhelming majority of the students. Courses in dental hygiene were discontinued in 1987. The Association of Dental Alumni was organized in 1926 to include graduates of both SDOS and CODOS. The Dental Hygienists Alumnae Association was founded in 1917 and was merged with the Association of Dental Alumni in the early 1980s. ORGANIZATION: Organized in four series: I. Executive Board; II. Dental Hygienists Alumnae Association; III. College of Dental and Oral Surgery of New York Alumni Association; IV. Oversize. SCOPE AND CONTENT: Most of the records of the Association of Dental Alumni are from the 1970s and 1980s, but there are programs and newspaper clippings dating as early as the 1930s. Minutes of the Executive Board date from 1978-1990 with a few gaps. Records of the Dental Hygiene Alumni Association include what appear to be complete class lists for all those enrolled in dental hygiene courses from 1917 up to the program's demise. Minutes and financial reports are present for 1924-1951 only. Also present in the records are course schedules and textbook lists for 1967/68, 1971/72-1986/87. There is also a one-volume register of alumni of the College of Dental and Oral Surgery of New York, listing graduates from the first commencement in 1894 until the last in 1923. RELATED RECORDS: Archives & Special Collections holds an incomplete set of the Association of Dental Alumni newsletters from 1939 onwards. SUBJECTS: College of Dental and Oral Surgery on New York.
