ARTHUR PURDY STOUT SOCIETY OF SURGICAL PATHOLOGISTS. Records, 1957-1992. 2.5 cubic feet (8 boxes) HISTORICAL NOTE: The Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathology, dedicated to maintaining high standards in the practice and teaching of surgical pathology, was founded in 1947 by a group of Stout's former students and associates. It was known as the Arthur Purdy Stout Club before it took its present name in 1956. The society sponsors lectures, seminars and fellowships in surgical pathology. SCOPE AND CONTENT: Correspondence; minutes and other records of the Society’s council, annual meetings, and committees; financial reports; membership directories; by-laws; and records of allied organizations such as the Intersociety Pathology Council and the International Academy of Pathology. The bulk of the records documents the election of new members and the annual Slide Seminars. The election material consists of nominating letters and the resumes of the candidates; occasionally annual lists of newly elected members are present. The Slide Seminars are case histories and slides on a specific theme, submitted and distributed in advance, which are diagnosed and discussed at the Society’s annual meeting. Contents of the seminar records vary, but almost always include case histories. Later records often include correspondence, attendance lists, agenda, and meeting minutes.
PROCESSING NOTE: Earlier accessions of Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists records were processed circa 1988 along with papers of the Arthur Purdy Stout. The combined collection was called the “Arthur Purdy Stout Collection of Surgical Pathology.” The Stout Society provided financial support to organize the collection.
Upon receiving additional Stout papers in 1998, the collection was reappraised, and the corporate records of the Society were separated from Stout’s personal papers and reprocessed. At this time, later accessions of Stout Society records were integrated into the older records. SUBJECTS: Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists.
