The Library maintains 15 lockable carrels as a service to library users who are engaged in research projects which require extensive use of library materials. The limited number of carrels prevents accommodating requests for general studying or "office" use. Only
individuals who are currently affiliated with CUMC are eligible for carrel assignments. Carrels are assigned on a first-come basis for periods of up to 90 days.
Doctoral candidates engaged in writing their dissertations may request a carrel assignment for the semester and have first priority in obtaining a carrel.
Although the Library will make every attempt to honor written requests for renewals, assignments to first-time users receive top priority.
TO APPLY FOR A CARREL
Email Rosario Recio rr50@columbia.edu or phone 1 212 305 4182
Include a description of the project for which the carrel is needed, and specify the amount of time required. The Library responds by letter to all requests for carrels. The letter assigning you to a carrel will include instructions for use of the carrel.
Other study areas are available in the Hammer Building, at the CUMC, Morningside Campus and in other building. Visit this web page to see a list of Study Areas.
