Borrowing privileges

Proper identification must be presented in order to borrow books. Please review our Borrowing privileges List of qualified identification.

Loan Period

Books circulate for three weeks. Archives and Special Collections materials, journals and reference materials do not circulate.

Returns

Materials borrowed can be returned to any Columbia University Library.

Overdue Items and Fines

Fines for overdue materials are $0.50 per day with a maximum fine of $15.00. For items that are not returned, users will be charged overdue fines plus the cost of replacing the item and a processing fee. The minimum amount is $120.00 per book.

Renewals

Only items borrowed from the Health Sciences Library Circulation Desk may be renewed. An item may be renewed an unlimited number of times, as long as another borrower has not requested it. Please see the renewal policies for more information, including how to renew your books by phone.

Hold, Recalls and Searches

If an item is checked out, a recall may be placed on it; this both prevents the current borrower from renewing their loan and ensures notification once the item is returned. If an item is not checked out and is not on the shelf, a search may be placed on it at the Circulation Desk. If it cannot be found, the item may be ordered through Inter-Library Loan. Click Here to fill out the Hold or Recall request form.

When a book is recalled from you by another patron, or if an instructor needs it for Reserve, the due date for that book will be reset, and you will be asked to return the item. If a recall is placed on a book you have borrowed, there will be a 1.00/day fee on the recalled book.

Designation of a Proxy

Officers, or people with mobility or visual disabilities, may designate a deputy borrower to borrow items in their name. The deputy must also have a valid CU ID, CUMC ID or NYSPI ID. Cards may be applied for at the Library Information Office, 234 Butler Library, or at the Health Sciences Library Circulation Desk. Click Here to complete a Deputy Borrower request form.
