Search and read full-text literature

EBSCOhost

Cost: Free
Authentication requirements: 9-month key accessed from EBSCOhost website while connected to the CUMC network.

The EBSCOhost app brings together all EBSCOhost databases (including CINAHL), except their ebooks. It allows you to search for articles by keyword or subject headings, and save or email searches and individual articles. 

To get a 9-month access code access CINAHL (an EBSOhost product) while on a CUMC campus desktop or laptop connected to a Columbia wireless network. Then scroll to the bottom of the page to the link that says "EBSCOhost iPhone and Android Applications", and enter your email address.  Enter the code that was sent to this email address when the app prompts you.

PubMed for Handhelds

Devices: iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android
Cost: Free
Authentication requirements: None

PubMed for Handhelds is the official app provided by the National Library of Medicine to access PubMed.  It can access full-text of Columbia subscription content when using a CUMC network (ie on Columbia wireless networks or when using VPN)  and it has an archive where you can get offline access to saved PDFs. 

The minor limitations of this app include no offsite access to full text using Columbia eLink (you must use VPN) and the inability to do complex literature searches using MeSH (BabelMesh translates from other languages, but does not identify MeSH terms).

Read by QxMD

Devices: iOS(iPhone and iPad)
Cost: free
Authentication requirement: EZ-Proxy and Read account created when setting up the app.

The Read by QxMD app provides full-text articles from many major journals including when off CUMC networks.  It can be used to follow journals, specialties, collections, or keyword strings of your choice and searching across the entire group of journals. The iPad version allows for annotation including highlights, note taking and drawing and both versions facilitate labeling of articles by keywords of your choice. Articles can be saved for later, emailed, or posted to Facebook and Twitter. 

When on CUMC networks the app will automatically check for full-text access provided by Columbia University and by adding your UNI and password to the app's settings area  you can easily access full-text through our proxy when off CUMC networks.

SciVerse ScienceDirect
SciVerse ScienceDirect Premium

Devices: iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android
Cost: Free or $2.99/year for Premium version
Authentication requirement: A ScienceDirect account created while connected to the CUMC network or a yearly payment for Premium version.

SciVerse Science Direct is the platform for searching Scopus. Search by keyword, author, and journal name.  Full-text is available in HTML format, not PDF.  Articles can be saved and emailed.

If you create a ScienceDirect account full-text can be accessed when off the CUMC network with the free version. More information on how to create an account is available at ScienceDirect's FAQ pages.

Read ebooks

ebrary

Devices: iOS(iPhone, iPad, iTouch), Android
Cost: free
Authentication requirement: Both an ebrary account, which will need to be revalidated every 90-days from a desktop connection, and an Adobe account are required to take advantage of all the app's features.

Ebrary brings together ebooks from multiple disciples, e.g. medicine, science, humanities, etc., that Columbia University subscribes to. Signing into the app with your ebrary account allows searching across and within ebooks and reading them online. Signing in with your Adobe account allows downloading of books to your device and reading title offline.

STAT!Ref Mobile

Authentication requirement: A "My STAT!Ref" account created while connected to the CUMC network. 

The first time you access the STAT!Ref app you will be prompted to enter a username (any email address) and password which can then be saved in the app settings. To create an account visit the STAT!Ref website, select the 'My STAT!Ref' link in the upper right corner of the screen and follow the prompts starting with your email address.

The STAT!Ref app allows offline access, bookmarking, and searching across the entire Columbia University STAT!Ref ebook collection. To browse the available titles visit the STAT!Ref website or our title list found here. At this time the special tools such as Anatomy TV and Stedman's Medical Dictionary can only be accessed via an internet browser.

Search and save citations

SciVerse Scopus Alerts

Devices: iOS(iPhone and iPad), Android
Cost: free
Authentication requirement: A ScienceDirect/Scopus account created while connected to the CUMC network.

The first time you access the Scopus Alerts app it requires a Scopus account username and password (the same thing as a ScienceDirect account) and email address. More information on how to create an account is available at ScienceDirect's FAQ pages.

The app allows you to set alerts on topics, save, cite, email, share, and favorite articles/citations.  You can also add notes.  It also has a feature to see who has cited an article. It does not provide any full-text access, only citation and abstract information.

Use Endnote

EndNote for iPad

Devices: iOS(iPad)
Cost: $9.99
Authentication requirement: To sync with existing EndNote libraries a free EndNote Web account is required.

The EndNote for iPad app allows for organizing and sharing of references on the go. PDFs can be annotated with free hand style writing tools.* References can be synchronized with EndNote on other platforms by signing up for an EndNote Web account. 

There are several settings accessed by selecting the app's settings gear button that can facilitate full use of the app.

  • Sign in with your EndNote Web account for one button synchronization of accounts.* 
  • Link a Dropbox account to manually imported PDFs.
  • Set the in-app web browser homepage to http://library.cumc.columbia.edu to allow for easy importing of references from resources like Pubmed. 

*Annotated PDFs currently loose the 'freehand annotations' when the EndNote account is accessed from another platform, however EndNote does provide a workaround here.

Thomson Reuters RefScan (EndNote Web)

Devices: iOS(iPhone)
Cost: free
Authentication requirement: A free EndNote Web account is required.

By taking a picture of a DOI number (typically found on printed copies of journal articles) the RefScan app creates a full citation that can be emailed or synced with an EndNote Web account. The app's ability to determine the DOI and correct citation is limited by picture clarity, however, the scanned DOI can be manually entered if an error is found.

UptoDate

Devices: iOS(iPhone and iPad), Android, Windows
Cost: free
Authentication requirement: An UptoDate username and password created while connected to the CUMC network. The account will have to be revalidated from a CUMC network connection every 30 days (UptoDate will send reminder emails with directions). 

The UpToDate app includes the familiar topic search, calculators and 'what's new' features seen on when accessing UptoDate from a desktop connection. It also allows for personal bookmarks and tracking of CME credits.

The UptoDate username and password can also be used to log in from an off-CUMC network desktop connection without using VPN.

DynaMed

Devices: iOS(iPhone, iTouch and iPad), Android and Blackberry
Cost: free
Authentication requirements: An authentication link sent via email after accessing DynaMed while connected to the CUMC network. Detailed information on downloading and installing the app is available on DynaMed's website.

DynaMed provides summaries on thousands of clinical topics, organized by topic, by ICD-9CM, or by drug, and strives to be as evidence-based and up to date as possible. Succinct bulleted layout and history and bookmarking functions makes it easy to use.

Note: This resource is available on a trial basis through June 2015.

Previous versions of the app required use of either the OMNIO or SkyScape apps. These versions will continue to work but will no longer receive updated content.
